Project Planning Meeting

By Dick Billows, PMP, GCA

Watch the video of a project manager working with a six person project team to develop their project plan. The project manager makes many mistakes during the meeting. Some of the mistakes are obvious, others are minor and some have serious long-term consequences for the project team's performance.

As you watch the video make note of how the project manager performed in these areas:

  • Making the overall project objective clear
  • Building commitment from the project team members
  • Letting the project team members know exactly what they will be accountable for delivering
  • Giving each project team member a reasonable opportunity to have input into the final estimate

When you have seen enough, slide the green scroll bar to:

  1. 4:08 to hear the thoughts of the PM and team about how things went and to learn how team members react to bad project manager techniques
  2. 5:54 to hear an analysis of the session by Dick Billows, PMP

The key point in the video is to see the serious consequences of project managers who attempt to intimidate team members into making the estimates they want for the project. Few team members will speak up in the meeting, but you'll hear their private thoughts in post meeting interviews and see the real damage that this project manager has done to the team member commitment and to the accuracy of the estimates.
